JOY YOUNG
Creative Bio
I am a Sydney-based fashion designer whose practice is grounded in storytelling through form and material. My work explores how garments can embody emotion, memory, and transformation, serving as vessels for personal narrative. I am drawn to processes that mirror natural cycles of growth and decay, valuing materials that record time through touch and wear. Through sculptural construction, craft-based experimentation, and a sensitivity to surface and structure, I aim to create pieces that feel both intimate and enduring. My design ethos embraces imperfection, transience, and the quiet power of change, with sustainability and conceptual depth at its core.
Design Statement
De Vaas reinterprets the ornate beauty of Delft pottery and the symbolic language of flowers through contemporary couture. Sculptural form-fitting silhouettes, ceramic vessels, contrasted with fluid drapery.
The collection combines denim, wool, calico, and crinoline with hand-carved printing, textural layering, and metal thread detailing, merging traditional craftsmanship with a modern sensibility. Designed for Autumn/Winter, its palette of Delft blue, ivory, grey, and silver reflects aged porcelain and fading blooms.
Targeted at the luxury couture market, each piece exists as both an adornment and an artefact, celebrating craftsmanship, symbolism, and emotional resonance.
