DESIGN STATEMENT:
‘Antecede’ delves into the unseen artistry that occurs in the moments before paint meets canvas. It unveils the tension, rituals, and silent beauty inherent in the preparatory stages of creation. By emphasising acts like building the frame, stretching the canvas, and blending pigments, ‘Antecede’ highlights the artistry within these quiet, yet critical processes. The wardrobe echoes the bold yet elemental tones of blue, red, white, and black, with concrete
components adding a harsh strictness to the otherwise delicate properties of paint. Each hue embodies a moment in the process before the painting. Blue symbolizing the calm focus of the artist, red represents the intensity of anticipation, white stands for purity and new beginnings, whilst black holds the mystery of what is to come. Redefining art as not just the final product but the intimate, often overlooked, steps that lay the groundwork for what is to come. Showing that true creativity lies even within the meticulous. ‘Antecede’ shifts the focus from the outcome to the beauty of the journey itself,
where the process transforms into the art.
